The most famous lady in America is revealing her secrets! The Statue of Liberty Museum opened this spring on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. Now the nearly 4 million people who visit the statue each year can learn more about the landmark.
The statue was a gift of friendship from France in 1886. Lady Liberty soon became a symbol of hope for immigrants in search of a better life. She arrived in New York Harbor during one of the country’s biggest immigration waves. For millions of people entering the country, the Statue of Liberty was the first glimpse of their new homeland.
People who visit the new museum can hear recordings of those immigrants’ memories. The museum also includes life-sized replicas of Lady Liberty’s feet and face.
