Ancient Fast Food Found!

When you hear “fast food,” you probably think of burgers and fries. But people in one ancient city enjoyed a different menu. Archaeologists in Pompeii (pahm-PAY) recently unearthed a fast-food stall called a thermopolium. Inside were jars that contained food and drink residue. These leftovers included a mix of fish, sheep, and snails!

This is the first complete food stall discovered in Pompeii.

How could leftovers last nearly 2,000 years? It’s thanks to Pompeii’s unusual history. Located in present-day Italy, Pompeii was once a busy city with about 15,000 residents. It was home to shops, theaters, and restaurants, like the one that was recently excavated, or dug up.

But Pompeii was wiped out in 79 a.d. On August 24 of that year, a volcano called Mount Vesuvius (veh-SOO-vee-uhs) began to erupt. Hot ash, rock, and deadly gases rained down. Within a day, the city was buried under ash and rock.

The lost city was rediscovered in 1748. Amazingly, the volcanic ash that buried Pompeii also preserved it. Researchers dug up buildings, artwork, and other items in near perfect condition.

The digging has continued for more than 250 years. Every item found provides new clues about life in Pompeii. Researchers are analyzing the remains of the ancient food stall. They expect that the snail mixture is just one of many discoveries to be made.
