Do We Still Need Movie Theaters?

It’s showtime! About half of the movie theaters in the U.S. have reopened. But things have changed. After most theaters shut down last year, some studios released movies straight to streaming. So people have spent months watching films like Soul from home. Does that mean theaters should be a thing of the past?

Some people say yes because they’re saving a lot of money. For example, a monthly subscription to Netflix costs less than $20 and offers multiple movies. A single movie ticket in a big city can cost as much as $20. Plus, many people prefer home-viewing so they don’t have to deal with rude people kicking their seats.

But others argue that after being stuck at home, people need theaters more than ever. They also point out that box office sales in the U.S. dropped more than 80 percent in 2020. If this continues, it could affect the U.S. economy, or how money is made and spent.

Here’s what two of our readers think.

There’s nothing like seeing a movie in a theater. It’s an experience I definitely don’t get at home. Watching a movie on a huge screen with sound effects surrounding me makes me feel like I am right in the middle of the action. As long as theaters take precautions to keep people safe, they should be open.

Also, movie theaters in the U.S. employ more than 130,000 workers. If theaters shut down for good, all of these people would be out of work.

We don’t need theaters. We just didn't realize it until this past year. When my family watches movies at home, we get comfy under blankets. We also pause the movie to get more popcorn or use the bathroom. In a theater, we’d miss part of the movie to do those things. And we’d pay a lot more for snacks.

Plus, at home, I get to watch movies with my dad via Zoom. I can't do that in a theater. He’s in the U.S. military and is stationed in Iraq.
