Cats or Dogs?
There’s no question that Americans love both dogs and cats. About 54 percent of households in the U.S. own dogs and 35 percent own cats, according to the American Pet Products Association. But one thing many people can’t seem to agree on is which animal makes a better pet.
Cat lovers argue that their pets are less of a hassle to care for than dogs. They point out that cats aren’t annoying because they don’t bark or jump on visitors. Also, it’s cheaper to own a cat. Most dogs eat more than cats do. And they often need training classes.
But many people say there are good reasons dogs are called “man’s best friend.” Dog owners point out that canines help people in ways that felines can’t. For example, walking their pets helps dog owners stay active. And dogs can be trained as service pets to help people who are disabled or have food allergies.
Here’s what two of our readers think.
Cats are much easier to care for than dogs. They can be left home alone more easily, and they’re better suited to live in smaller homes or apartments. Also, cats use litterboxes, while dogs need to constantly be let outside to use the bathroom.
Cats are great companions, especially for people who want to relax at the end of a stressful day. Meanwhile, dogs can get excited and jump on you. Some dogs even bite, which can be dangerous.
There are so many reasons dogs are better than cats. First, they’re smarter than cats. They can learn tricks and be trained as service dogs. A dog named Murphy works at my school! He’s a therapy dog that helps kids.
Also, dogs are loyal. They leap off the couch to greet you when you get home, and they always try to stay by your side. They can go on a walk with you, play ball outside, or even join you for a swim.
