Should Schools Ban Cupcakes?

Something is missing from classroom birthday celebrations in Arlington, Virginia. You won’t find cupcakes, cookies, and other treats in public schools there. As of this school year, students in the district aren’t allowed to bring in snacks for parties.

Many schools across the country have similar rules. School officials point out that sweet treats often have ingredients that could be dangerous for students with food allergies. Some schools allow only healthy snacks, like fruits and vegetables, for class celebrations.

But not everyone thinks sugary treats should be banned from classroom parties. They say it’s much more festive to have cupcakes than apples at a party. Plus, some people argue that parents can buy or make sweets using ingredients that are safe for kids with allergies.

Here’s what two of our readers think.

Parties with sweet treats can exclude kids with food allergies. Once, my class had cupcakes made in a factory that processed peanuts. So my friend who’s allergic to peanuts couldn’t have them. No one should feel like the odd one out.

Also, having too much sugar can cause tooth decay and other health problems. You can celebrate without sweets. One year on my birthday, my class played an exercise game from GoNoodle together. It was fun!

Cupcakes and cookies aren’t the healthiest foods. But it’s OK to enjoy them in small amounts for special occasions. Celebrating with sweets gives us a chance to take a break from schoolwork.

Students may be able to invite only a few kids to parties outside school. But class parties include everyone. They should be as fun as possible. For my birthday one year, I brought in cookies for the class. It felt special to provide treats for everyone.
