Do Kids Need Homework?

Many kids dream of not having to worry about homework. That dream has come true for kids in the LaSalle Parish school district in Louisiana. In January, the district announced that students wouldn’t have homework for the rest of the school year.

Jon Garrett is the superintendent of LaSalle Parish schools. He says homework can make school feel like a chore. He adds that not having homework allows students to spend more time with their families.

“It gives our kids more time to rest up and recharge when they are away from us, away from school,” Garrett says.

But not everyone is ready to give up on homework. Many people say it’s a good way for teachers to check whether students understand what’s being taught in class. Others argue that homework helps kids build good study habits, which will be useful in high school and beyond.

Here’s what two of our readers think.

Homework is useful because it helps you remember what you learned in school. It allows you to review lessons from class on your own time and at your own pace. And having homework helps you manage your time wisely. After school, I fit in my homework around volleyball practice and dance lessons.

Homework also gives parents a chance to see what their kids are learning in class and help them if they’re falling behind.

Kids need a break after spending six hours or more at school each day. Sometimes homework is just repeating work we already did in class. Grading homework takes up a lot of teachers’ valuable time too.

Many kids have activities after school. When I have guitar lessons, I feel rushed to finish my homework. Plus, it can be stressful for parents to make sure homework gets done. They could be having fun with their kids instead.
