Are There Too Many Holidays?

You probably know that October 31 is Halloween. But did you know that October 7 is Taco Day? It’s one of about 1,600 special days listed in the National Day Calendar. These include both official and unofficial holidays.

Many people argue that a lot of these made-up holidays are meaningless. Some of them were started by companies just to sell products.

But others say unofficial holidays can be harmless fun. And some, like International Volunteer Day, even encourage people to do good deeds.

Here’s what two of our readers think.

Holidays aren’t special if we have them every day. And celebrating Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk Day or Alien Abduction Day is just silly. Fake holidays take away from the magic and importance of the real ones.

Plus, some made-up holidays, like National Candy Day, encourage us to buy and eat unhealthy foods.

Having unofficial holidays gives us more to look forward to. Some stores have special deals, like a free doughnut on National Doughnut Day. Celebrating these holidays is optional, so you can ignore them if you want.

Also, some holidays are for a good cause. For instance, National Wildlife Day helps raise money to protect endangered animals.
