Should Dogs Be Allowed in Restaurants?

Diners love to sit outside with their dogs on the patio of The Bearded Pig, a restaurant in Jacksonville, Florida. But late last year, the restaurant’s owners found out only service dogs trained to help people were allowed at their restaurant. While many local governments allow dogs at outdoor dining areas, Jacksonville’s was not one of them. The Bearded Pig’s co-owner, Chad Munsey, wasn’t ready to ban four-legged guests.

“Dogs are part of people’s families,” he says. “They want to take them to lunch and dinner, and we’ve always encouraged that.”

Munsey and his co-owner persuaded local leaders to change the rules. As of January, Jacksonville restaurants can apply to have dog-friendly patios.

Many people are thrilled to not leave their pets at home when they dine out. But others don’t want to eat with dogs—especially if they drool, pee, or poop.

Here’s what two of our readers think.

Dogs make people happy, and allowing them in restaurants could bring in more customers. Some owners don’t want to spend too much time away from their pets, so they’ll choose only dog-friendly restaurants.

Plus, dogs help people connect. When customers ask to pet a dog, they might start a conversation with its owner and make a new friend. And those who don’t like dogs? They can just pick a different restaurant!

Allowing dogs in restaurants can be dangerous and unhealthy. They shed hair and dander, which can cause allergic reactions in some people. And if dogs wander too close to where food is prepared, that hair can wind up in people’s meals.

Also, pups can disturb diners with loud barking or scare people by growling. If people aren’t comfortable eating near dogs, a restaurant could lose business.
