Welcome, educators and caregivers! We are so glad you’re here.

Now more than ever, it’s fundamental that kids explore and cherish their own identities, appreciate and partake in the joy of human diversity, recognize injustice in the world around them, and feel empowered to take action to create a better world for all.

That’s why we created this collection of engaging, relevant, and age-appropriate content to support your lessons on Black history. These articles and resources have been selected from Scholastic’s upper elementary magazines—Scholastic News, Storyworks, and SuperScience

The hub is divided into three curated collections that will guide you and your students through a journey of knowledge-building activities. We suggest that you begin with the resources in “Start the Conversation” and then proceed to the “Know the Past” and “Empower the Future” sections.

  • The “Start the Conversation” collection will help you set the foundation for your conversations about race, diversity, and inclusion.

  • The “Know the Past” collection focuses on the history of slavery and the civil rights movement in the U.S. and will build the background knowledge students need to make sense of current events and will provide the necessary context to have thoughtful conversations.

  • The “Empower the Future” collection will introduce your students to inspiring Black changemakers—both kids and adults—to support lessons on courage, resilience, and equity.

Each section includes a lesson plan to help you guide your students through the content in a thoughtful and meaningful way.

Before you get started, we encourage you to review our Vocabulary section and our Strategy Guides. These resources will help you facilitate meaningful exchanges with your students.

We sincerely hope this hub will help you on your mission to build up each child’s sense of self-worth, capacity for empathy and acceptance, and curiosity about our diverse world. As time goes on, we will continue to add more content and resources. So keep checking in with Teaching Our World to see what’s new!

Happy teaching!
