Set a Purpose for Reading

Have students list news events they recall from 2022. Invite them to vote on which ones they would include in a summary of the year, and explain that they’re about to read a summary put together by the Scholastic News editors.

1. What are three facts you can learn about the British monarchy from the section “A Royal Farewell”? Sample response: From this section, you can learn that the British monarch can be a king or queen, that the role is passed down in a certain family, and that the monarch rules over all of the United Kingdom—England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

2. Choose one person named in the article. Explain why this person made headlines in 2022. Sample response: Ketanji Brown Jackson made headlines in 2022 because she became the first Black female justice, or judge, on the U.S. Supreme Court.

3. Why do you think the author writes that Hurricane Ian “slammed into” Florida? What does this phrase tell you about the storm? The author uses the phrase “slammed into” to show that Hurricane Ian made landfall in Florida with a lot of force. The hurricane had very strong winds and heavy rain.
